Seeing Patterns Through the Noise

This year marks my 15th year in business and the 11th year as a proud member of the Entrepreneurs' Organisation Queensland Chapter. Being part of this incredible organisation has allowed me to apply the scientific methods we learn in dentistry to the social science of business. Through observing hundreds of business owners and my own journey, I've noticed certain patterns emerge.

In my recent speech in Adelaide, I discussed what I call the different levels of entrepreneurship:

Level 0: Where I started as a dentist
Level 1: Working as a practice manager
Level 2: Functioning as a general manager
Level 3: Operating as a CEO
Level 4: Serving as a board member

I shared my journey through these levels, exploring how they impact our ability to perform, the skills needed to master each level, and crucially the skills we need to unlearn to progress.

Unlearning is a powerful skill that all business owners need as they grow their organisations. Presenting to EO members, known for their high standards and attention to detail, was a thrilling experience. Receiving an average rating of 96% after the two-hour seminar has given me the confidence to continue sharing my insights with the EO and broader business community, and perhaps even the dental community.

I look forward to presenting more this financial year. With EO chapters in nearly every major city worldwide, I can firmly say: 1 down, 219 chapters to go! Many thanks to Trevor Keen and Ricky at the EO Adelaide board committee for giving me the opportunity to transform into a business speaker.
